You will leave with additional knowledge, experience, capabilities, and enthusiasm that makes it feel like you purchased a completely new software package.   Ted’s expertise is only surpassed by his talents for teaching MAX, on any level appropriate for his audience.   Class members identify topics they would like to have addressed, which Ted weaves into the fabric of his class via real world examples, while demonstrating new techniques and “not to be missed” features of the latest release of MAX.

A word about Teds Fundamentals Class:
As Murph says, it really pays to start with the Fundamental class because I cover things that are difficult to pick up when working on your own.
The Intermediate class picks up were that one leaves off, so if you don't have the fundamentals down pat it's much more difficult to keep up.
The Fundamentals isn't the same thing as a “ basic ” class, we don't spend any time on the interface or those things that are easily self-taught, but jump right in to workflow and production techniques.
Hope to see you soon
Ted

These most recent email exchanges could stand as a standard starting point for you to start working with Ted.

Could you give me an idea of what you think is slowing your production down at this point? As Murph says the definition of fundamental and intermediate are moving targets, depending on what you  already know about max or viz. Many people doing excellent work for years, but they are working much too hard at it because they are missing a few fundamental (not basic) tools or concepts in max or viz.

If you don't mind, let's see if we can start a dialog about what types of things you'd like to be able to do or improve your skills on.

Thanks
Ted
>

Another Starting point:

>Before I spend extra money on a training software I was wondering how advanced does this set go?

If not to advanced then is there an advanced training set available? I have a Maya background but my current school teaches 3ds Max/VIZand I have already exhausted the instructors abilities :<<

Well, I'm not sure if what we cover is advanced or not, but it is extremely important topics that will help you get the first 80% of your work done more quickly, efficiently, and with more flexible editing capability.

I help you take advantage of some of the more obscure, but critical, methods of utilizing max to the fullest. For example, you need a complete understanding of how the coordinate systems function to be able to use any of the alignment tools or even transform objects. You need to understand how to make full use of 2D shapes and the workflow of the modifier stack to create controllable, efficient models.

A good knowledge of the coord. systems and 2D then allows you to make full use of Lofting in max which not only has modeling benefits, but also allows you to do things with materials that other modeling techniques don't allow.

We work on making lighting (Standard) both efficient and convincing and how to create materials that will interact with that lighting and be flexible for quick changes.

I'm quite certain you will leave here with a much better understanding of how max actually works so that the buttons and tools make more sense. Very few educators have had much production experience so that they can show you how max functions and why you might choose one method of working over another. They show you where the buttons are, primarily.

Hope that helps some, Richard, and hope to see you in class.

Here is a letter from someone who took our advise and contacted Ted Boardman about this upcoming class.

>>I have been reading the info on the site about the upcoming class and it says that the  ... max/viz class is an intermediate to advanced level class. I am not quite sure what that means.<<

Hi Manny,

Each class's level is adapted to those in the class as everyone has different needs and what might be intermediate for you might be advanced for someone else (and even fundamental for some users).

In the intermediate classes it's presumed that people are already producing work and need to learn the things that make their current renderings look much better and, at the same time, faster.

Modeling, materials, and lighting are the focus topics with animation or effects thrown in when someone in the class requests it. Modeling is new combinations of modifiers, box modeling, and intermediate lofting, while materials gets into masking and blends/composites, again for flexibility and speed. Lighting covers topics of efficiency with shadows and reflections and photometric lighting.

Those complex scenes on the website aren't part of the class because too much time would be spent waiting for the renders, but you learn the techniques necessary for that type of work.

The only thing we often cover in the class not related to viz is a little reactor dynamics as a modeling tool, but there are plug-ins that will do similar things in viz, so it's good to know about. Cloth objects is a good example.

The class parallels the book in somethings, but because I can customize the class it's more personal for you, perhaps. Both are extremely valuable, of course!! :)

Hope to see you there, Manny, who's the instructor that told you about the class? Thank them, in any case.

Ted

Here is a very nice email we just received regarding our latest Ted Boardman Max / VIZ 2005 ADVANCED Class:

Murph.

I wanted to email you and Ted today thanking you both for a great time as well as an educational one, so please accept my gratitude for both!

This is the 3rd class I have taken at the Virtual Partners facility, with Ted Boardman instructing, and it certainly will not be my last.  Each time I leave with additional knowledge, experience, capabilities, and enthusiasm that makes it feel like I purchased a completely new software package. Jim’s facility is a wonderful example of an atmosphere set up to optimize this type of hands on class in a way that really makes you feel welcome and comfortable.  My only complaint is that the days just go by to quickly.

Jim Gempeler A.I.A. is a licensed practicing architect and co founded GMK Architecture inc. in 1984.  I have used 3d studio MAX/VIZ for my main design tool since the initial release.  My use of 3d design visualization was featured in the CADENCE magazine may 2000 issue.  Examples of our work and visualizations can be viewed on our web site:  www.gmkarch.com

Thanks again for a really great 3 days of MAX and your hospitality!

Jim

Also attending this Advanced Class:

Hi Jim,

I wanted to thank you and Ted Boardman for another excellent training session on 3D Studio Max.

Virtual  Partners Training Center and Ted Boardman continue to provide an atmosphere conducive to the studies of 3d Studio Max. I have a great deal of appreciation and respect for Jim and Ted's dedication to the 3d visualization community. As an illustrator, the quality of training I receive is invaluable. Ted's approach to teaching is as personable as it is technical. Whether eating breakfast at a local diner or exploring tutorial techniques.....the language spoken is Max. "Borrowing geometry and drinking coffee is a great way to spend a training session."

Customer Story
Buying a home is a big decision. By relying on 3ds max software as its design visualization tool, RM Design Studio makes that decision easier for prospective home buyers, while decreasing costs and increasing sales time for builders and developers. Builders and developers use 3ds max imagery provided by RM Design Studio with one or two model homes to represent the entire line of home styles available for buyers to choose from. In some cases, RM Design Studio’s clients forgo the model-building process altogether and rely solely on the 3ds max imagery to help them sell.  Read more.

Customer Story

A picture may be worth a thousand words. But when it comes to digital architectural design, the picture must be dimensionally accurate to be of value. That’s why KDLAB relies on Discreet’s 3ds max® software as its primary 3D modeling and animation tool. “3ds max can be as accurate as we need it to be,” says Joseph Kosinski, a partner, along with Dean Di Simone, at KDLAB. “3ds max is a very fast and fluid modeler. So when we’re not worried about being exact with our dimensions, we can quickly mock up formal ideas that are fairly complex. On the other end of the spectrum, this software allows you to work in real units—feet, inches, centimeters, and so on. And from an architecture point of view, this is very important.”  Read more.

Additional coverage:

"This max session intermediate experienced user will learn modeling techniques that will enhance productivity by quickly producing efficient models with flexible editing capabilities. Included will be Lofting techniques and Spline based Patch modeling of objects and characters.

Attendees will also learn to use material types such as Multi/Sub-object and Shellac in conjunction with map types such as Falloff and special features of Gradient Ramp to enhance the look and control of materials.
